Volkswagen Sharan

Sporting sliding doors, VW’s new, Portuguese-built Sharan MPV. The old model, a cooperative effort between VW (Sharan/Alhambra) and Ford (Galaxy), was not exactly a high point of automotive design, but it sold well and more than 600,000 were built.

It will be available with the same range of engines as the current passat, which it shares its chassis with. Meaning there will be a good selection of petrol and diesel engines as well as manual and automatic transmissions. It should also handle OK, with double wishbone suspension and anti roll bars all round as standard.

The new model is wider and longer but lower and lighter than the old Sharan, It goes on sale in August.

We just hope they utilise that passat chassis and shoe-horn the V6 engine from the R36 into it – that should scare those Zafira VXR drivers!
